Detox is the most urgent level of care you market, so the work starts with who answers the phone at night and how fast admissions can say yes.
Ahrefs estimates that people in the United States search "detox near me" about 6,300 times a month, "alcohol detox near me" about 3,200 times, and "drug detox near me" about 1,900 times. Each of those searches comes from someone, or someone's family, who wants a program they can reach soon.
Detox is the most urgent level of care you market. Withdrawal doesn't wait for office hours, and a caller who reaches voicemail at night can dial the next listing in seconds.
That is why we build detox center marketing around speed and availability before channels. Who answers the phone, how fast admissions can say yes, and whether insurance gets checked on the first call all matter before any keyword list does, because an ad can only deliver a caller to whoever picks up.
Verification of benefits, or VOB, is the insurance check admissions runs before an admit. When we rebuilt paid search for Rize OC, an Orange County program with detox, outpatient, and mental health lines, detox campaigns had the highest VOB density in the account, so they were funded first.
Outpatient budgets grew only after the detox unit economics held, and mental health campaigns opened once conversion data supported them. Within four months, average cost per acquisition fell to $115, down from $350, while monthly ad spend rose to about $300,000, up from about $10,000.

The lesson for your own budget is that detox demand is dense and time-sensitive. If your phones, admission rules, and insurance checks can handle that demand, detox is a sound place to prove your ad spend before you widen it to other programs.
A detox program that advertises 24/7 admissions needs a person on the phone at 3 a.m. who can ask about substances, last use, and insurance. An answering service that takes a name and promises a callback adds a delay, and the caller has other numbers to try.
Pull a month of call data and sort it by hour. Call tracking tools such as CallRail show answered, missed, and voicemail calls by time of day, and the overnight rows tell you whether your coverage matches your ads.
If you can't staff nights yet, match your ad schedule to the hours someone answers and state your admission hours plainly on the page. California Prime Recovery added an AI chatbot and automated email follow-up so visitors who weren't ready to call still reached admissions, and follow-up no longer depended on whoever saw the form first.
Our guides to lead response time and rehab call tracking cover the setup in more detail.
Families calling a detox program first want to know whether you can admit their person today. Your site should answer that before the phone rings, in words your medical director has approved.
Same-day admission criteria are the conditions under which your team can accept a patient on the day they call. Write them with clinical and admissions staff together, then publish the parts a family needs to see.
| Question the caller has | What the page should say | Who signs off |
|---|---|---|
| Can you admit today? | Admission hours, including nights and weekends, and how long intake takes | Admissions director |
| Do you treat this substance? | The substances your medical team manages withdrawal for, named plainly | Medical director |
| What if it isn't a fit? | Whether you refer to a hospital or another level of care, and how that handoff works | Medical director |
| What should we bring? | ID, insurance card, current medications, and your packing list | Admissions director |
| Is transport available? | Whether you arrange pickup and which area you cover | Admissions director |
A page that says "same-day admission available" with nothing behind it creates calls admissions has to turn away. Specific criteria let the right callers recognize themselves, and they give your Google Ads a landing page that keeps the promise the ad made.
Detox is a medical service, so the page has to show the medical team before it shows the rooms. Say who is on site overnight, how often nursing staff check vitals, how physician coverage works, and which license and accreditation the program holds.
Put names and credentials on the page where you can, and have a licensed clinician review it before it goes live. Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines treat health content as Your Money or Your Life, or YMYL, which holds pages that could affect a reader's health to a higher standard for accuracy and trust.
Keep medication names and outcome claims off your ads. Google's policy on personalized ads also bars ad copy that implies the viewer has a condition, so the ad names the service and the place, and the page carries the clinical detail.
Insurance is the question that can stall a detox admit, so run the verification on the first call whenever your team can. A caller who hears a coverage answer in the same conversation has one less reason to keep dialing.
Put a short VOB form on every detox page for people who can't talk yet, and ask only for the carrier, member ID, date of birth, and a callback number. Keep insurance and condition details out of URLs, event names, and ad pixels, and send the form to the same admissions queue that answers the phone.
Cost per VOB tells you whether an ad is bringing real callers. Rize OC's account averages $1,500 per VOB and $8,000 per admit at scale, and the team steered budget toward VOBs rather than raw leads. Our guides to the VOB landing page and the insurance verification page show the layouts.
Generic "rehab" campaigns send a benzodiazepine search and an alcohol search to the same page. For Rize OC, we split campaigns by substance, with benzo detox, fentanyl detox, and alcohol detox each getting their own structure, and used exact and phrase match on detox terms where traffic quality mattered most.

Every campaign got at least five dedicated landing pages built for message match, so benzo detox traffic reached a benzo detox page. In one headline test, "Orange County Benzo Detox" beat lines about insurance and same-day assessment, and the winner named both the substance and the county.
Calls need attribution at the same level of detail. Rize OC assigned unique tracking numbers across Google, Bing, and Meta, and CallRail dynamic number insertion tied every inbound call to the ad group and landing page that produced it, so budget decisions ran on calls rather than form fills alone.
Location gets the same treatment. Rize OC ran separate campaigns for California and out-of-state searches, with ZIP code targeting across the US, so budget could follow the markets that produced VOBs and admits. Bing Ads and Meta were added only after Google performance stabilized, with Bing picking up search volume at lower cost per click.
| Search | Ahrefs US monthly volume | Keyword difficulty | Where the click should land |
|---|---|---|---|
| detox near me | 6,300 | 7 | The detox page for the nearest location, with admission hours |
| alcohol detox near me | 3,200 | 8 | An alcohol detox page |
| drug detox near me | 1,900 | 1 | A drug detox page that names the substances you treat |
Keyword difficulty, or KD, is Ahrefs' 0-to-100 score for how hard a term is to rank for organically. Scores this low mean your organic pages can compete for the same searches your ads buy, which our drug rehab SEO guide covers program by program.
Plan on at least $5,000 a month in Google Ads media for meaningful data, and expect leads within the first 1–2 weeks once tracking is set. Our drug rehab PPC guide covers negatives, bidding, and landers, and our rehab PPC agency team builds detox accounts this way.
For "near me" searches, Google shows a map pack of three local listings above the organic results, and your Google Business Profile competes there. List admission hours that match your real phone coverage, route the listed number to the admissions line, and add photos of the detox unit itself.
Reply to reviews without confirming that the reviewer was ever a patient. A profile that says "open 24 hours" while nights go to voicemail sends that caller to the next listing, and our local SEO guide for rehab centers covers the profile setup.
Detox is short, and what happens after it matters to the family as much as the first night. Your detox pages should say what comes next, whether that is your own residential program, PHP, or IOP, or a program you refer to.
Step-down referrals run in both directions. Outpatient programs without a detox unit need somewhere to send patients, and your detox needs places to send patients who finish withdrawal and need a longer stay, so write down how each handoff works.
Never pay or accept anything of value for those referrals. EKRA, 18 U.S.C. § 220, makes it a federal felony to pay or receive remuneration for referrals to substance use treatment facilities, recovery homes, or labs, and it applies to all payors.
Sweet Media doesn't sell purchased leads, and our guide to purchased leads explains what they hide. For how detox fits alongside your other programs, see our addiction treatment marketing guide.
LegitScript certification is required for addiction treatment ads on Google, Meta, Microsoft Ads, and Nextdoor. It makes you eligible to advertise, but it doesn't guarantee that any single ad will be approved.
Meta also requires its own written permission for US addiction treatment ads under its drug and alcohol addiction treatment policy. Meta removed detailed targeting based on health causes in January 2022, so detox ads on Meta can't target people by condition.
That Google policy treats health as a sensitive category as well, which rules out remarketing, Customer Match, and custom audiences for detox. Your search campaigns have to win on the first click, and our LegitScript certification guide walks through the application.
We recommend at least $5,000 a month in Google Ads media spend so the account produces enough data to make bid and budget decisions. The right number above that depends on your market, your certification status, and how many substance and location campaigns you run.
Google Ads usually produce leads within the first 1–2 weeks once tracking is in place. SEO takes longer, and in our client work local rankings usually move within 60–90 days.
Not on Google for health services. Google's personalized advertising policy treats health as sensitive, so remarketing, Customer Match, and custom audiences are off the table for detox campaigns.
No. Paying for referrals to substance use treatment can violate EKRA for any payor, and purchased leads hide where a caller came from, while your own site, ads, and map listing keep the source visible.
If you want an outside view of your detox funnel, we'll review your call coverage, admission pages, and ad account and send a written audit within 5 business days. Book a strategy call and we'll start with your overnight hours.
