Detox, residential, PHP, IOP, and sober living are separate search markets. Plan drug rehab SEO around each one and measure it by calls, VOBs, and admits.
People in the United States search "rehab near me" about 11,000 times a month, "detox near me" about 6,300 times, and "intensive outpatient program near me" about 2,200 times, according to Ahrefs estimates. Each of those searches is someone, or someone's family, deciding where to call.
Drug rehab SEO is the work that puts your treatment center in front of those people in the organic results, the map pack, and Google's AI Overviews. Most centers treat it as one project with one keyword list, and that is the most common mistake we see.
Detox, residential, PHP, IOP, dual diagnosis, and sober living behave like separate search markets. Each one needs its own page, its own local footprint, and its own proof, and the rest of this piece is built on that idea.

Treatment search puts three pressures on a website at once: the stakes are high for the reader, the paid channels are restricted, and you compete with directories and call centers as well as other programs.
Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines put health content in a category called Your Money or Your Life, or YMYL. Pages in that category are held to a higher standard for expertise, accuracy, and trust, because a wrong answer can hurt the person reading it.
Paid search is gated too. Google only serves addiction treatment ads for advertisers with LegitScript certification, and approval takes time. Organic search has no certification gate, which makes it the one search channel every licensed center can work on from the first day.
The last pressure is who you rank against. For a search like "drug rehab near me," which Ahrefs puts at about 6,000 monthly US searches, a regional program competes with national directories, helpline sites, and larger networks with bigger budgets. The way a regional center wins is by being more specific than they are, program by program and city by city.
Before you touch a page, list every level of care you admit to and every location that offers it. Then look at how people search for each one, because the demand and the competition are different for every program.
The table below uses Ahrefs estimates of monthly US searches and keyword difficulty (KD), a 0-to-100 score for how hard a term is to rank for.
| Level of care | Top searches (US monthly, difficulty) | What the searcher needs to see first |
|---|---|---|
| Detox | detox near me (6,300, KD 7); alcohol detox near me (3,200, KD 8) | Medical supervision, admission hours, and insurance |
| Residential | inpatient rehab near me (4,100, KD 20) | Length of stay, the daily schedule, and the setting |
| PHP | php mental health (2,000, KD 2); partial hospitalization program near me (1,100, KD 0) | Hours per day and whether they sleep at home |
| IOP and outpatient | outpatient rehab near me (2,700, KD 7); intensive outpatient program near me (2,200, KD 10) | The schedule and how it fits around work or school |
| Dual diagnosis | dual diagnosis treatment near me (500, KD 0) | Which mental health conditions are treated together |
| Sober living | sober living near me (6,300, KD 28) | House rules, cost, and location |
Two patterns stand out in that data. The volume sits in searches that pair a program with a place, not in the word "rehab" by itself, and difficulty swings widely between programs. "Alcohol rehab near me" scores 39 on difficulty, while "partial hospitalization program near me" scores 0.
That gap is where a single-campus center can win early. If you run both a PHP and a residential program, the PHP page will usually rank sooner because fewer strong sites compete for it. Start there, then build toward the harder terms as your site earns authority.
Each level of care at each location deserves its own page. A detox program in one city and a detox program in another are two pages with two addresses, two teams, and two map listings. Folding them into a single locations page asks Google to guess which city you serve.
Specific pages earn specific searches. In our New Hope Health case study, the search "sober living knoxville tn" brought 111 organic clicks on its own, and the site now earns 4,761 monthly organic clicks, up from 1,352.
A program page has two jobs. It has to show Google that it is the best answer for one search, and it has to answer enough of a family's questions that they call you instead of going back to the results.
Name the level of care, the city, and who the program serves in the H1 and the opening lines. "Residential addiction treatment for adults in Tempe" tells Google and the reader far more than a slogan does. Then describe what a day looks like: when groups meet, how many hours of therapy there are, and when family can visit.
Put named clinicians and their credentials on the page, along with your state license and any accreditation you hold, such as The Joint Commission or CARF. Families look for these details, and Google's rater guidelines ask who is responsible for a health page before judging whether it can be trusted.
Insurance is one of the first questions admissions hears, so the page should say which carriers you work with and link to a short verification form. A verification of benefits, or VOB, is the check your admissions team runs to confirm coverage, and making that step easy is how a ranking turns into a call.
Ask your admissions team for the ten questions they answer every day and put honest answers on the page. Those questions match what people type into Google, and clear answers give AI Overviews something accurate to quote.
For page-level detail on forms and call paths, see our guides to insurance verification pages and rehab website trust signals.
Eight of the nine searches in the table include "near me," which means Google shows a map pack of three listings above the organic results. Your Google Business Profile competes there, and it runs on different signals than your website does.
Give each location its own verified profile with the correct primary category, real photos, accurate hours, and the same name, address, and phone number your website uses. Ask for reviews through a process your compliance team approves, and reply to every review without confirming that the reviewer was ever a patient.
Check map rankings from several points around each facility instead of your front door alone. A listing can rank first on your street and drop out of the pack a few miles away, which is the gap our map pack tracking guide explains.
Location searches reward that work. In our OC Revive case study, the search "oc revive lake forest" holds an average position of 1.5, and the site earns 17,824 monthly organic clicks, up from 8,176. Our local SEO guide for rehab centers walks through profiles, citations, and multi-location setup step by step.
Content in this category has to be right before it can rank. Every page should state facts you can support, avoid promises about outcomes, and cite a named source such as SAMHSA or NIDA when it describes treatment or withdrawal.
Have a licensed clinician review program and condition pages before they publish, and show the reviewer's name and credentials on the page. Use person-first language, such as "a person with a substance use disorder" rather than "an addict," which follows NIDA's guidance on stigma-free terms. Pages about withdrawal, overdose, or mental health crises should also point readers to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Blog posts need the same care. An article about withdrawal symptoms is a health page, so it needs a named author, a clinical reviewer, and a date, the same as a program page. Our piece on accreditation and rehab SEO shows how to display credentials so both families and search engines can see them.
Technical SEO is the part of the work that lets Google load, read, and trust your pages. On treatment sites, the same three problems come up in almost every audit we run.
RELATED READING
Slow mobile pages are the first. Families often search on a phone, and a program page that takes several seconds to load can lose them before the phone number appears. Google measures this with Core Web Vitals, which track loading speed, responsiveness, and layout stability.
Duplicate location pages are the second. Pages that swap only the city name read as copies, and Google tends to index one and ignore the rest. Each location page needs its own address, staff, photos, and details about that facility.
Tracking is the third. Analytics tags and ad pixels on intake forms can collect health details by accident, so keep condition and insurance information out of URLs, event names, and pixel data. Then confirm that calls and forms are still credited to organic search, or you will never see what SEO produced.
Technical fixes show up in cost as well as rankings. In our California Prime Recovery case study, the site moved to passing Core Web Vitals alongside a 30% reduction in paid cost per acquisition. Our rehab website CRO audit lists the intake-path checks we run.
Google's AI Overviews and chat tools like ChatGPT now answer many treatment questions before anyone clicks a result. They tend to cite pages that state facts plainly and consistently, so your program names, locations, and insurance details should read the same on your site, your Google Business Profile, and the directories that list you.
Write program pages so one paragraph can stand alone as an answer: what the program is, who it serves, where it is, and how admission works. Add FAQ sections and structured data that describe your organization and locations. Our AI Overviews guide for treatment centers goes further on citations and how Google connects your brand to your locations.
Google still treats links from other sites as a sign of which treatment centers it can trust, and this category leaves little room for shortcuts. Paid link networks and off-topic guest posts put a regulated healthcare brand next to spam, and cleaning that up takes longer than it took to build.
The links that help most come from relationships you already have: local news coverage, recovery community organizations you support, alumni events, professional associations, and referral partners who already send you patients. Ask for a link wherever the relationship already exists.
We show clients where every link we build lives, and you should expect that from any agency. If a vendor won't show you the links, assume you would not want your name on those sites.
Rankings and traffic tell you whether the work is moving, but they don't tell you whether it is filling beds. The numbers that matter are the ones your admissions team already tracks.
| What to track | Traffic view | Admissions view |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Average position across all keywords | Rankings for program-plus-city searches |
| Visits | Total organic sessions | Organic sessions to program and insurance pages |
| Leads | Form fills | Tracked organic calls and forms by program |
| Quality | Bounce rate | Verified insurance checks (VOBs) from organic leads |
| Outcome | Not measured | Admits your team credits to organic search |
Give organic visitors their own tracking number, pass the source of every form into your CRM, and ask admissions to confirm the source on each admit. Our call tracking guide covers the setup in detail.

Those figures come from our published case studies, and Revival Mental Health now earns 4,789 monthly organic clicks, up from 730. Hillside Horizon ran SEO and paid search together, so its admits reflect both channels, alongside 6,074 monthly organic visits, up from 557.
SEO and Google Ads work best together, but they do different jobs. Ads can produce calls within a few weeks once LegitScript certification and tracking are in place, while SEO takes months and keeps producing after the budget stops.
A new center that is still waiting on certification should put SEO first. A certified center in a competitive metro usually needs both, with ads covering the searches the site can't rank for yet, and we recommend at least $5,000 a month in Google Ads media spend for meaningful data.

If your site has never had focused SEO work, this is the order we follow in the first three months.
Our realistic 90-day marketing plan shows how SEO fits alongside paid search and referrals over the same window.
In our client work, local rankings usually start moving within 60–90 days and competitive organic terms within 90–120 days. Technical fixes and Google Business Profile updates tend to show first, and the full timeline depends on how strong the competing programs in your market are.
Our SEO packages run $3,000–$5,000 a month, month-to-month. Where a center lands in that range depends on how many locations and levels of care you run, how competitive your markets are, and how much of the site needs rebuilding, and the free audit sets it. Our rehab SEO cost guide explains what the fee covers and how to weigh it against an admission.
No. LegitScript certification is required to run addiction treatment ads on Google, but organic rankings have no certification requirement. It still helps to keep the claims and program details on your site consistent with what your ad account says.
It usually is, because referral partners and families look you up before they call, so your program pages and reviews shape referrals too. SEO also gives you a source of admissions that doesn't depend on any single referral relationship.
Local SEO covers your Google Business Profile, map rankings, citations, and location pages, which decide the "near me" searches. Organic SEO covers program pages, articles, and technical health across the whole site, and most treatment centers need both.
It depends on whether your team can cover technical work, clinical writing, local listings, and reporting at the same time, which is rarely one hire. If you are comparing agencies, use our guide to evaluating a drug rehab SEO agency and ask every vendor to show you their links and their admissions reporting.
If you want a second opinion on your own site, our rehab SEO team will review it one level of care at a time and send a prioritized plan within five business days, at no cost.
