Treatment centers, telehealth, and psychiatry sell to patients and families, while billing firms and labs sell to clinic owners.
A detox program needs families within driving distance to find it on the map late at night, while a billing firm needs a CFO in another state to find it during vendor research. Both are buying search work for a healthcare company, but the pages, reviewers, geography, and leads they need are different.
Ahrefs estimates about 3,800 US searches a month for “healthcare SEO agency,” with a keyword difficulty of 5 out of 100, so plenty of operators are shopping for this help. The right plan for a treatment center still looks nothing like the right plan for a lab.
Treatment centers come first here because they are the core of what we do. Billing and RCM firms, toxicology and diagnostic labs, telehealth, and psychiatry and private practice follow, since each has its own buyer and its own searches.
Healthcare SEO is the work of getting a healthcare company’s pages found in Google’s organic results, map pack, and AI Overviews by the people who buy its service. For the companies we work with, those people fall into 2 groups.
The first group is patients and families, who search for treatment centers, telehealth practices, and psychiatrists, often on a phone and often under stress. The second group is clinic owners, CFOs, clinical directors, and administrators, who look for billing firms and labs while doing vendor research at a desk.
| Business | Who searches | Search area | What counts as a lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treatment center (detox, residential, PHP, IOP) | People seeking care and their families | Local, city by city | Calls, insurance checks, and admits |
| Telehealth practice | People seeking care and their families | Each state where your clinicians are licensed | Booked assessments |
| Psychiatry or private practice | Patients, families, and referring providers | Local, by office | New patient calls and appointments |
| Billing or RCM firm | Treatment center owners, CFOs, and billing managers | National | Qualified proposal requests |
| Toxicology or diagnostic lab | Clinic owners, medical directors, and administrators | The states or regions you serve | Qualified account inquiries |
An agency that treats all 5 business types as one keyword list will build the wrong pages for at least three of them. The first decision in any plan is which audience a page is written for, because one page can’t speak to a worried parent and a CFO at the same time.
For a treatment center, the searches that turn into admits pair a program with a place, such as detox in a named city or “IOP near me.” Each level of care at each location needs its own page with the schedule, the clinical team, accepted insurance, and a clear way to reach admissions.
Local search carries most of that demand. Each facility needs its own verified Google Business Profile, its own location page, and reviews gathered through a process your compliance team approves. Our drug rehab SEO guide lays out the level-of-care structure, and our local SEO guide for rehab centers covers the map pack.
Organic search is also the one search channel with no certification gate. Google and Meta require LegitScript certification for addiction treatment ads, so a new center can build organic rankings while its application is still pending.
Specific pages earn specific searches. In our New Hope Health case study, the Knoxville outpatient program now earns 4,761 monthly organic clicks, up from 1,352, and the search “sober living knoxville tn” alone brought 111 organic clicks. OC Revive in Lake Forest reached 17,824 monthly organic clicks, up from 8,176.
Revival Mental Health, a residential mental health program in Orange County, grew to 4,789 monthly organic clicks, up from 730. Hillside Horizon, a teen residential program, now counts 4–6 admits a month, up from about one, and that client-reported figure reflects SEO and paid search running together.
Telehealth practices, psychiatrists, and private-practice therapists also sell to patients and families, so the page rules for treatment centers still apply. Clinical review, clear insurance or fee details, and a plain description of the first appointment matter as much here as they do on a detox page.
Geography is where they differ. A telehealth practice should build its search area around the states where its clinicians are licensed, with one page per state that names who holds that license. Google’s Business Profile guidelines require a location customers can visit or a business that travels to them, so a telehealth-only practice competes in the organic results instead of the map pack.
Psychiatry and private practices usually have an office, so each office gets a Business Profile and each clinician gets a bio page. That page should list credentials, specialties, insurance, and whether the clinician is taking new patients, because patients and referring providers often look up a clinician by name. Our mental health SEO guide goes deeper on condition pages and telehealth state pages.
A behavioral health billing company sells to a treatment center owner, CFO, or billing manager, and that buyer searches for the service by level of care. Terms like detox billing, IOP billing, and behavioral health revenue cycle management (RCM, the process of getting claims paid) signal someone comparing vendors.
That buyer can be anywhere in the country, so the search is national and the map pack matters little. What wins is one service page per level of care and per service, such as credentialing, utilization review, and verification of benefits. A research library on CPT codes and denials then links into those service pages, so informational visits lead somewhere commercial.
We ran that plan for Cipher Billing, a national behavioral health billing company based in Costa Mesa. After a May 2026 website rebuild and 55 billing and coding posts published April through July, Cipher’s keywords in Google’s top 10 grew to 87, up from 2, and monthly organic clicks reached 889, up from 100.
Its flagship term, behavioral health revenue cycle management, climbed to position 5, up from 85, and monthly impressions rose to 99,802, up from 5,316. Cipher’s LinkedIn page carried the same operator language, because billing buyers evaluate vendors there as well as on Google.
A B2B healthcare page is read in full by someone at a desk. Put the levels of care you bill for, the payers you work with, and the reports clients receive on the page, because a CFO checks those details before asking for a proposal.
A toxicology or diagnostic lab sells to clinic owners, medical directors, and administrators who decide where their specimens go. Those buyers search for a toxicology lab for treatment centers, a specific test menu, or a lab in their state, and they compare service area, billing practices, and result reporting.
Referral law shapes how a lab can market itself. EKRA, the Eliminating Kickbacks in Recovery Act at 18 U.S.C. § 220, makes it a federal felony to pay or receive remuneration for referrals to labs, recovery homes, and clinical treatment facilities, for all payors. An agency working with a lab should refuse any fee tied to the number of specimens or accounts referred, and your counsel should review the marketing plan.
Organic search fits that constraint, because the lab earns the inquiry with its pages instead of paying for it. Build a page for each test category and each state or region you serve, then write the billing and compliance pages an administrator reads before switching labs. A regional lab should skip pages for states its couriers and licenses don’t cover.
Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines put health content in a category called Your Money or Your Life, or YMYL, which is held to a higher standard for expertise and trust. Treatment, psychiatry, and telehealth pages all sit in that category, so each needs a named author, a named clinical reviewer, and a date.
B2B content needs review too, by a different expert. A post on CPT codes or denial management should be checked by a certified biller or coder, and a lab’s test pages by its medical or technical director. An agency that can’t name who reviews each page type is publishing unchecked health or billing advice under your name.

Use person-first language on every patient-facing page, such as “a person with a substance use disorder.” Any page about withdrawal, overdose, or a mental health crisis should also list the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Treatment centers and practices with offices win most of their demand locally, so the page plan follows the facility list, with one location page and one Business Profile per address. Check map rankings from several points around each facility, since a listing that ranks first on your street can drop out of the pack a few miles away. Our map pack tracking guide shows how to measure that.
Telehealth plans follow state licenses, labs follow the regions they can serve, and billing firms plan nationally around service and level-of-care terms. Mixing those up wastes the budget. A billing company that builds city pages attracts traffic it can’t use, and a single detox that chases national terms ranks against directories it will rarely beat.
Treatment networks with several campuses sit in between, with local pages for each address and shared program content. Our multi-location SEO architecture guide covers how to set up those 2 layers without duplicate pages.
Put the same 6 requests to every agency, and ask for proof from a company like yours rather than a general healthcare sample.
Treat a guaranteed ranking, a guaranteed admit count, or an offer of purchased leads as a reason to end the call. Our guide to evaluating a drug rehab SEO agency turns these into RFP questions you can send, and our comparison of behavioral health and general healthcare agencies explains where a specialist earns its fee.
Rankings and traffic show whether the work is moving, but the number that matters is the lead your business already counts. For a treatment center that is the admit, and for a billing firm it is a proposal request from a program that fits your client profile.
| Business | Lead to track | Quality check | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treatment center | Tracked organic calls and forms | Verified insurance benefits (VOB) | Admits credited to organic search |
| Telehealth or psychiatry | Booked assessments | Licensed state and insurance fit | Patients who complete intake |
| Billing or RCM firm | Proposal and demo requests | Program size and levels of care | Signed clients |
| Toxicology or diagnostic lab | Account inquiries | Service area and test fit | Accounts sending specimens |
Give organic search its own tracking number, pass the source of every form into your CRM, and have admissions or sales confirm the source on each admit or signed client. Our guides to rehab call tracking and cost per lead versus cost per admission cover the setup.

We are a behavioral health SEO agency based in Costa Mesa, California, and our work centers on treatment centers and the healthcare companies that serve them. In-house writers produce every page, we show clients every link we build, and we don’t sell purchased leads.
In our client work, local rankings usually move within 60–90 days and competitive organic terms within 90–120 days. Partnerships are month-to-month, and our industries page lists the program types and adjacent businesses we take on. Our behavioral health marketing guide shows how SEO fits with paid search and referrals.
Healthcare SEO is the work of making a healthcare company’s pages rank in Google for the people who buy its service. For treatment centers and telehealth, that means patients and families, and for billing firms and labs it means clinic owners and administrators.
It includes a technical audit, one page per service and location, clinical or specialist review, a Business Profile for each office, links from real partners, and tracking that ties leads to organic search. Core Web Vitals, which measure loading speed, responsiveness, and layout stability, belong in that technical audit.
In our client work, local rankings usually start moving within 60–90 days and competitive organic terms within 90–120 days. Cipher Billing’s ranking gains were measured about three months after its May 2026 rebuild, so a site’s starting condition matters as much as the market.
Our SEO packages range $3,000–$5,000 a month, and the free audit, delivered within 5 business days, sets where your scope lands based on locations, programs or services, and how much of the site needs rebuilding. Our rehab SEO cost guide explains what the fee covers.
They benefit from it, because clinic owners and administrators research labs online before they switch, and EKRA limits paying for referrals. Service-area pages, test menu pages, and billing pages give those buyers something specific to find.
Yes, we are based in Costa Mesa, and OC Revive, Revival Mental Health, and Hillside Horizon are Orange County programs in our published case studies. The same location-page and Business Profile work applies in any market where you have an office.
If you run a treatment center or a company that serves one, request a free SEO audit and we’ll send a prioritized plan for your pages, search area, and lead tracking within 5 business days.
